NO.1

What do you think of the Hyundai Blue Prize, acuratorial Prize for young Chinese curators?

An excellent, much-needed platform and vehiclefor young Chinese curators to test their metal, working to a theme that isalways selected to be relevantto the moment, and that offers the opportunity tohave their proposals seen by an international group of curators and artworkers. Hyundai Blue Prize further offers the support of a mentoring systemfor each of the selected six finalists, who then get to have their issues andqueries refined through acompletely unbiased dialogue.

Importantly, Hyundai Blue Prize providesthechance for the finalists to visit museums in Korea and another internationallocation, and to hear direct from other curators and museum workers the ways inwhich large-scale exhibitions are produced. Finally, the two winning projectsare provided with a serious budget to enable them torealise their exhibitions. In short, the Hyundai Blue Prize programme providesa uniquely holistic approachto support and promotion of China’s young curators.

The top6 of Hyundai Blue Prize 2019 has come out by thejuries carefully evaluation.Would you please tell us your selection criteriafor the shortlistedcandidates?

I always look for projects that are in linewith the theme. It is always possiblefor curatorial concepts to extend a brief(the theme) but they must show that they have thought it through and not justcome up with something they want to do, no matter how brilliant, that isentirely unrelated to the brief. In thereal world, that is not how thingswork.

I also look for projects that demonstrateafeel for art, and for the works they have selected from artists they haveidentified. I don’t want to feel the selection is superficial or random, butthat it connects intelligently to the proposal.

I also look for concepts that are clearly andsimply articulated. This usually indicates that the curator knows what theywant, and don’t need to hide behind reems of theory.

I then look at the individual experiencetosee how the proposal matches up to what they have done. I am keen to see howthey have handled themselves previously, and if they are entirely new, then howwe can best support them if their ideas are great but their practicalexperience limited.

NO.3

I would like to know yourviews on the future developmentdirection and prospect of Chinese young curators.

It is achallenging time. Thereseem to be more museums but few are engaging youngcurators to createinnovative programmes for them. With the economic downturn,we also seegalleries hunkering down and focusing on safer and simplerapproaches toexhibiting art. China offers few platforms for young curators –actually anycurators – to explore ideas and gain wider experience. That’s whyHyundai BluePrize is a great programme.

Chen Jiaying

Key for ChenJiaying’s project is the curator’s focus on three ideas about entangledsocialrelationship: I like the way these ideas play with the ways in whichtechnologyis guiding and compartmentalising perception and emotion; activelyshapingsocial intelligence because it informs our experience of relationships.Thecurator’s statement is supported by a strong, diverse, and thoughtfulselectionof international and local artists.

付了了

Fu Liaoliao

In herproposal, FuLiaoliao describes her concept as exploring the idea of"fictional journalism",by which the thrust of her interest lies inassessing through the chosenprojects how we determine situations of reality orfiction. Her approachleverages artworks that play with ideas of AI as bothcreator (constructer) of thevirtual and channel for the real.

Li Boyan

LI Boyan'sproposal "Clouds on the Island"tackles theproximity and impactof the virtual upon social (individual) lives, which can beunderstood as the breakdown of communities into individuals as tiny isolatedislands. We quiteliterally meet in the "cloud" where everythingabout us "lives" – all the datathat represents us today. Li Boyanlooks at this contemporary condition throughthe metaphor of an island, cleverlyusing all the AI technology that maps ourexistence wherever we go and at everyencounter with others as the mechanismsfor joining or not gaining admittance tothe island community. Key in thisproject is its level of interactivity;thosemechanism one must navigate tojoin the show.

Tang Yuzhen

TangYuzhen's project takes the impact of algorithms as its core theme. Theprojecttakes into account the topic of this year’s theme of social intelligencewithpotential for an interesting show.

WangDongdong

Wang Dongdong's project goes insearch of resolving an age-oldand impossible proposition: In such acontemporary society motivated by capitaland innovations, were humans areincreasingly superfluous to use, in his words"In order to feel “a sense ofgain", we have to create a"future" that is completely different from thereality. I amintrigued to know the conclusion he will draw.

Chen Min & ZhangYehong

Thisprojectcomes with a great introductory text which informs readers that thecurators’have thought deeply about their topic, and have alighted on awhimsical, yethighly appealing trope around which to build an exhibition. Theanimal key usedto divide the exhibition by topic / artist is well-conceived ina metaphoricalsense for the emotive social and individual experience thecurators seek to explore.Theselection of artists is focused on young andemerging practices, which showssome intelligence on the part of the curators –we assume they have theirfingers on the pulse of the emerging generation.
